Tom is a bad boy who means well generally and always comes out on top. Sanctioned rebel; points out the hypocrisy of the town by being told to be good, being bad, and eventually being rewarded for it. Teaches child to break rules and do whatever they like. Written for a young audience, even though it has an adult, snarky narrative voice. Sympathy is with tom and his friends. Injun joe feels like an outsider, much like tom and huckleberry: being excluded by the town means two things: that you are free but you are also shunned. Really about how foolish a town of people are as a whole: ready to love someone they were willing to hand earlier, tom and huckleberry are able to see the foolishness of adults. He dreams of being someone who is beloved by the town and popular. Even though each chapter seems to be a separate event, everything ties together by the end.
