Intellect + intelligence usually associated with advanced civilizations in victorian culture. Brute force would be based on a lower order/social class. Mill: law of might vs. law of right. He is associated with evolutionary science and the link it posits between the human species and less civilized life forms such as the primates. The novel complicates simple binary oppositions between civilized and uncivilized, black and white, british and african. Novel is not progressive in racial and political stereotypes, but it questions and complicates them. Wants to traffic in those stereotypes at the same time as questioning the premises on which they are based.
