Focus is the key to these novels
We need to think about why the novels we are looking at are in the order they are in- this is
because of influence- Stein influenced Winesburg Ohio
Looking once again at the map- it is shown that the map has more inaccuracies than it being an
accurate map of Winesburg- this was more due to the influence of Andersons publisher
Adeso does’t astat like “tei ut does ed fo siilal
Adeso did’t at to all his ook Wiesurg Ohio- he wanted to call it the book of the
grotesque- publisher chose to change partially due to marketing
But also since Winesburg Ohio gave it a more accurate name- gives a more boring look but
easier to understand
Struggle with the fact that we have to struggle with competing voices in this text
Works well despite, by changing the name it allows people to actually want to buy the book
Old man wrote the book of the grotesque but it never was published- if Anderson got his way
then his book would be pulished ee though i the ook it as ot
Think about the old a’s defiitio of gotesue *
Anyone of the characters are considered concerned is said to be grotesque- they have sought to
seek out and live by a single truth virginity- or lust- or excess- or luxury- grotesque because
they live their lives on one single thing- they become exaggerated
Each of the people are label able- they can be reduced to a single essence which makes them
grotesque- each of the people are have a single label- but is this true?
All the stories are very similar- so in a way no- we get reoccurrence like in Stein. All begin in day
and end at twilight
All the characters have a fascination with hands- the book begins with a chapter titles hands
trouble with hands- if occurs in all the of them comes back to what the old man said as
grotesque
keep ou hads to ouself- father says while beating Wayne- he has done nothing wrong to
be labelled as grotesque the boy misinterprets the situation and informs father and all the
fathers and mothers get riled up and teacher ends up with negative exaggeration
Fustatig eause thee is satteig of eleets i the ook that does’t atte o the ap
where other places that matter greatly are under exaggerated or left off entirely
Why does the title of WO work well? Forget about the small town aspect and the collection of
random stories
While the stories are all about one town all the stories are independent of each other
Is the title accurate? To deal with the whole town when only a handful of random people in the
town
It’s all aout the eah eeedig the gasp i.e Great Gatsby- the reaching out at the end of the
dock to reach for Daisy across the bay Daisy is not worth what Gatsby is trying to instil in her-
Fitzgerald abandons modernism in this piece- he is incredibly old fashioned and while Daisy is
superficial she means something to Gatsby and to Fitzgerald
