In 1868 quit his job as an engineer in indiana and walked to florida (1000 miles) Lived and travelled in ontario, along lake huron in 1860"s. Moved to yosemite, conducted environmental science, pushed for creation of national park, co-founded sierra club. Linked living in the wild with spirituality. By end of 19th century, european settlement of north america is complete. Parks movement emerges (yellowstone 1872, algonquin 1893) Laurier and roosevelt make conservation a policy issue. First entomologist employed by government of canada. Started ottawa field naturalists club, active in conservation of birds and wildlife. Helped bring about migratory birds treaty 1916.
