Down on the factory farm (reading) by peter singer. Industrial era changed the way that animals are raised and slaughtered for food in the us. Degrading the status of animals without moral status. Over 100 million cows, pigs, sheep are raised and slaughtered in the us each year. We use terms to conceal the origins of the meat: ex we eat pork, not pig. Large corporations and assembly line methods of production have turned agriculture into agribusiness. 5 billion chickens are slaughtered in the us each year. 8 of these large corporations account for over 50 percent of the 5. 3 billion birds killed annually in the us. Birds need to establish a social order and they cant do this when there is crowding. This problem of vices cannot be solved as it would reduced profit margin. Debeaking began in 1940 in san diego to try and stop the killing where they would burn off the beaks of the chickens.
