CRIAW: Violence against women & girls
Half of all Canadian women have survived at least 1 incident of sexual or physical
violence
In 1997, fathers accounted for 97% of sexual assaults that took place & 71% physical
assaults of children by parents
- Assaults themselves maybe very low, but the father was the main person who did it
Only 10% of sexual assaults are reported to the police

- There is a lot of resistance and believing prevalence of sexual assault
98% of sex offenders are men, 82% of survivors of these assaults are girls & women
Women and abusive relationships
- Women stay in violent relationships because of: 1) fear 2) lack of resources 3)
violence is just part of life 4) love, loyalty 5) low self-esteem 6) shame 7) lack of
support 8) immigration sponsorship
o People are more scared of what would happen when they leave the relation, they
are safer being with the person than leaving
o Financially they have become dependent on the abuser, they are unable to sustain
themselves
o Violence is a part of life, he’s great a lot of the times and this is just part of my
life
o Love and loyalty, I love him, and he loves me
o Victim feels shame, they brought this upon themselves
o Immigrant women in Canadian society are tied to their husbands because of their
landed status
- Women don’t always report sexual assault because: 1) don’t recognize date or marital
rape as sexual assault 2) feel responsible for attack 3) fear not being believed or
alienated 4) fear retribution & further violence from offender 5) have no faith in the
justice system
o We have this idea that boyfriends and husbands cannot rape women
o There is a sense of shame thinking that they caused it and that why it didn’t
happen to others rather than her
o Many are not believed, that they are lying and most times they chose not to say
anything at all
o Fear that if they tell, they will get hurt, the guy might attack
- Physical & sexual abuse of girls & women costs the Canadian economy & taxpayers
