Imperialism & colonialism were radically different ways of organizing space than had been seen for much of human history. Mini-systems were used by both hunter-gatherer & agrarian societies. Precursor to organization of territory into empires & imperial systems. Usually occurred without the formal consent of the people living within the borders. One of the longest & most important empires in the world today. Fell after their defeat after ww1 (very chaotic collapse) Negative: abuse, exploitation, imposition of values and institutions. Positive: tolerance of difference, civilizing & modernizing, harbinger of global order and peace. The age of discovery , which lasted about 500 years. Experiences varied greatly by place, over time, the colonial actors involved, and the places colonized. Vast changes in population (20 million people left ireland & the uk; trans-atlantic slavery) Effect on europe: controlled travel, so constructed a world with europe at the center. Europe came to depend on non-european products to a great degree.
