Largest in area but least in population. Demographic features shaped by: small population, limited capacity of land, aboriginal population, high birth rate and low death rate, out-migration, non-aboriginal population leaves. Two visions of the region : northern frontier with resources for exploitation, homeland for aboriginal language and culture. Territories don"t have power over natural territories. Remains resource frontier far from rest of population. Urban centre fall into two categories : native settlements, regional service centres. High proportion of workers in primary sector than other regions. Unemployment is very high due to high proportion of primary sector workers (boom-bust situation) Public government in nunavut (aboriginal and non-aboriginal are equal) Four physiographic regions : canadian shield, interior plains, cordillera, arctic lands. Positive and negative effects : opening of nw passage for boats, good for seals, bad for bears. Whaling: began in late 1500s, early whalers went back home after season. Forgotten frontier : ottawa didn"t care, little value.
