Document Summary

Trees vs. shrubs, leaf types, drought tolerances. Decided on 8 types of trees & 6 types of non-trees (grasses & shrubs) By combining these functional types you can get all the biomes. Some temperate plants need a cold season to survive: if it doesn"t get cold enough they don"t regrow. Not important in tropical trees & non-trees. Some plants need a certain # of days above 0 c to live: primarily in temperate & colder zones, not as important in non-trees. All have minimum water needs, except desert plants. If more than one functional type is present, use the dominant one. When there is less ice present there are more trees ka = kilo-annum = 1000 years ago. When there is a large ice sheet the sea level is lower, so the bering strait land bridge was exposed (you could walk between russia and alaska) When russia and alaska were connected it was much easier to migrate between the two.
