Still seen as slaves even though they were free. Demolished by city of halifax in 1960s. Halifax was founded in 1749 when african people dug out roads and built it. Mix of freed slaves, maroons and black refugees from the way of 1812. Economy built on fishing, farms and local businesses. City collected tax but didn"t provide services. After explosion in 1917, city didn"t give money to rebuild. In 1930s residents petitioned for services but were denied. African united baptist church known for music and preaching. Plans to turn area into industrial zone approved by city.
