GEG 2304 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Thermocline, Westerlies, Intertropical Convergence Zone
Document Summary
Basic structure of the hadley circulation low pressure is low because there is upper air divergence and convergence at the surface. It is a band of low, some is frictional convergence and rising motion and divergence aloft. Stronger in the summer hemisphere and weaker in the winter. Moves poleward in the summer and equator ward in the winter. There is sinking motion- where the westerly and northern winds meet there is the jet stream. Rising motion, westerly"s(southwesterly), subtropical jet, leading to the subtropical high. This tends to be a very stable air mass. It can be very broad or very narrow, it all depends. Within the low pressure area there is the convergence zone of the trade winds from the northern and southern hemisphere. They come together in the itcs (intertropical convergence zone). This is here the trade winds come together.
