Earth materials that are a part of the earth system. Approximately 30 are common in the earth"s crust. Formed by the crystallization of magma (molten rock) These rocks can be either intrusive or extrusive. Alteration of rocks (either igneous or sedimentary) at depth by intense heats and/or high pressure. Light elements ( o, si, na, k, al ) Not always at the bottom of the ocean. Lithospheric slabs that float above a deformable (ductile) asthenosphere. Original horizontality sediment layers deposited in horizontal position. Lateral continuity deposits are laterally extensive oldest at the bottom and youngest at top inclusions pre-date the formation in which they are found. Unconformities cross-cutting unit is younger mappable surfaces of regional extent. A surface marking a substantial break or gap in the geological history; marks a major period of erosion or non-deposition. 4 types of unconformities unconformity determined from age difference (absolute date or fossil evidence).
