Elder abuse: any action or inaction by any person which causes harm to the older individual or vulnerable person. It can also be defined as a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action occurring within a relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. 4% to 10% of older adults have experienced some form of abuse most of which is passive, verbal, emotional, or financial (not physical violence or neglect). The abusers are usually those who are in positions of power such as family members like adult children or a spouse, service providers, caregivers, or even strangers. Often, the abuser is dependent on the victim for food, shelter, and/or money. Being female since female victims outnumber male victims by almost 2 to 1. Institutional settings since they place individuals at the mercy of strangers.
