Primary aging is normal, nonpathological changes that occur. Secondary aging is linked to disease, detrimental lifestyle, and environmental factors. Tertiary aging is loss of physical and cognitive functioning before death. Often height loss due to compression of vertebral discs and slight curve of vertebral column. 20% decrease in body muscle mass between 30-70. Body image increase in body fat due to slowing metabolism: men view body as whole entity functioning is most important. Aging is positive impact: women view body as many parts. Skin: develops wrinkles, dryness, age spots, thinner, less elastic, fragile, photo aging is damage caused by the sun. Hair: greying is genetically programmed, alopecia is hair loss from scalp. Hearing: presbycusis is normal hearing loss as part of aging. Damaged hair cells, changes in auditory canal and ear drum, natural hair loss in cochlea, loss of neurons in auditory nerve. May worsen when other health issues present: hearing declines faster in med, tinnitus is ringing of ears.
