GRT2111 Diseases of Thyroid
Psychoneuroimmunology
- study of interactions between psychological processes, nervous system and
immune system
- takes place via 2 pathways
o 1) HPA axis hypothalamic pituitary adrenal
o 2) SNS sympathetic nervous system
How does immune function change with age?
- the efficiency declines
- increase in autoimmune responses (form antibodies against own cells)
- results: more infections, more severe infections, more autoimmune disorders
Psychoneuroendocrinology
- study of interactions between psychological processes, nervous system and
endocrine system
- triggered by hormones (thyroid) or nonhormones (blood sugar) and
contributes homeostasis
Function of endocrine system
- endocrine system secretes hormones into blood/lymph
- hormones control reproduction, growth, activates body defenses, balance
of electrolytes/water/nutrients, cell metabolism
- age affects it by atrophy, decreased secretion, homeostatic failure
Thyroid gland has 2 pathologies in aging
- (yperthyroidism Grave’s disease
- Hypothyroidism (myxedema)
Hyperthyroidism
- caused by excess thyroxine (T4)
- symptoms: weight loss, heat intolerance, tremor
- treatment: radioactive iodine, surgery, medication
Hypothyroidism
- 3 types: primary, secondary, tertiary
- caused by: underproduction of T4, not enough TSH, malfunction
hypothalamus
- symptoms: fatigue, weight gain, pale dry skin
- treatment: artificial thyroid hormone
Hyperparathyroidism
- caused by overfunction of parathyroid
- symptoms: calcification of bones, kidney stones, GERD

Psychoneuroendocrinology study of interactions between psychological processes, nervous system and endocrine system triggered by hormones (thyroid) or nonhormones (blood sugar) and contributes homeostasis. Hormones control reproduction, growth, activates body defenses, balance of electrolytes/water/nutrients, cell metabolism. Age affects it by atrophy, decreased secretion, homeostatic failure. Hyperthyroidism caused by excess thyroxine (t4) symptoms: weight loss, heat intolerance, tremor treatment: radioactive iodine, surgery, medication. 3 types: primary, secondary, tertiary caused by: underproduction of t4, not enough tsh, malfunction hypothalamus symptoms: fatigue, weight gain, pale dry skin treatment: artificial thyroid hormone. Hyperparathyroidism caused by overfunction of parathyroid symptoms: calcification of bones, kidney stones, gerd.
