Health and wellness, social determinants of health, intersectionality. Health is a complex term and has many meanings. For example, in the 1800s, health was the opposite of sickness. Deaths were poorly understood, as there was a narrow de nition as individuals were either sick or well. Today we typically view health in the sense of wellness, by actively manipulating health behaviours. Complex understanding of social determinants of health, inequalities, etc: john snow (1813-1858) Who did not believe in the miasma theory. He was interested in outbreaks of cholera in. The cases of outbreak were concentrated in the poorest areas where there was a bad smell. Miasma theory: disease and illness was caused by bad smells (miasma). Miasmas came through bad air and foul smells. Rich people lived on top of hills, poor people lived in gullies. He was the father of modern epidemiology. He tracked cases of cholera in london (soho)1854, by mapping cholera cases.
