Early 20th century: shift in global centre of power away from europe to soviet. Union, us, and for a brief time, japan. Us has no need for powerful military in 19th century > they were surrounded with no enemies/weak states and also had no desire for world power/involvement. Usa still filling up their country - lots of livable land (1803: buy louisiana from. French, get texas, and war russia for mexico); expand to west and fill out the mid- dle. Turner closing of the frontier (no more place we could expand on to) > Would lead to change of powers; us will have to eventually look outside of their boarders. War with spain (1898: war starts us expansion, spain at the time was crumbling / nearly dead, cuba - spain was still holding on and in power here - complicated relationship with us is ever present. Cubans want to be in charge of them selves and not part of spain.
