WWI(summer1914): Final Phase (1917-1918)
Life Behind the Lines
-Social and demographic impact
Everyone has to do their part to help the war effort
Social Change: women have important role; they have to replace the men in am-
munition factories, where millions of shells and bullets are needed everyday
-Men cant work in their factories because they’re fighting and in the trenches
-not many women in workforce, they have to step up; deliver mail, drive busses
and trucks, work on farms (feed soldiers), nurses, etc. Tremendous increase in
women participation in workforce (women go back out after war)
Women get to vote in Germany and US after WWI; Some places (i.e. France)
don’t see correlation
1914-1918 birth rates in Europe plummet, along with so many deaths (war and dis-
ease) = gap/disconnect between generations, “lost” generations = people in power
before WWI will most likely stay in power longer because no one to replace/vote
(i.e. Ludendorff still there in WWII. Lots of oldies!) = decrease economic activity and
output
Spanish flu breaks out and kills ~30-40million in 1918 (trend of less people worse) -
WORSE THAN BLACK DEATH, worst in world
-Revolution and upheaval (CLASS THURS, OCT 1)
Russian gov falls, Lennon in power
German gov falls, Hindenburg and Ludendorff from Russia take charge of Ger-
man government
Russian treaty with Germany —> Germany gets everything they want and walks
all over Russia, because Lennon* wants peace at all costs
