HIS 2129 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Electrical Telegraph, Electric Generator, Electromagnet
Document Summary
Innovation and technology transfer before the 19th century was not at a consistent pace, seen in the previous chapters. The next stage involved the standardization and unification of the many enterprises founded to take advantage of new technologies and resources. Innovation did not slow down in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Steam engines became more efficient and powerful. Steamliners and tramp steamers replaced most types of sailing ships at sea, replacing keelboats and flatboats. Invention of the internal combustion engine advanced motorization, opening up personal transportation. Invention of the telephone extended the capability of the telegraph, and enhanced communication between groups. Chemistry pushed the development of cheap steel, creation of dynamite, and artificial dyes. Ventures were back by financiers such as j. p. morgan. Along with the new media and communication systems, a new economy has been forged. During the early 19th century, it was more of an experiment than a key to living.
