Uk and us have economic interest in china. Japan still has a dominant position in china: almost is a japanese protectorate. Us starts to turn gaze to asia, especially what japs are doing: mostly economic interest in keeping china open to foreign trade, open door policy: us wants to preserve openness of chinese markets. Us and japan start competing in pacific: early signs of trans pacific tension = significance.
