HIS1100A 03/11/10 Japan  First incursion by St. Francis Xavier  Commodore Perry sailed to Tokyo bay with warships in 1853 to force Japan to sign a trade treaty.  Japanese Emperor overseeing this reformation was Mutsuhito (Emperor Meiji 1867-1912)  Combine modernity, feudalism, militarism and industrialization  Followed British model of parliament and navy  Army was followed under Prussian model  Schools and barracks were under American model  Law courts designed by French and German jurists  Transferred to the Gregorian calendar  Built infrastructure (railways, telegraph lines etc)  The Japanese state was leaning towards an authoritarian state  1894-1895 First sino-japanese war, Formosa (Taiwan) and Korea was given to the Japanese
