Modernism is a rejection of modernity superficial conformity = problematic. There has always been a divide between russia and the rest of europe. In the 19th century, russia sort of fits, but after 1945, it really doesn"t. Russia does not follow the same liberal pattern as the rest of europe. Tsar nicholas ii (r. 1894-1917) reform minded but also reactionary. Russian workers are radicalised by rapid economic change that creates further instability and problems revolutionary ideas at the end of the 19th century workers tempted.
