Most places have more than just one creator. Montreal starts off as a religious utopia idea. Thought catholicism could create a perfect society. Island = mont royal, soon became montreal. In the 18 th c - other key towns. Trading posts sometimes turn into a settlement. Evolve as towns under the american regime later on. In french city = forti ed, town = not. Geography prevents it from spreading out too much. Cities are not where the bulk of the population live. No where close to being as dense as we see today. Do not achieve density as european towns, or american towns. Due to demographics - still so few people in the colony. Tired to make edicts that buildings must be stone to cut down on re. Architecture evolved to follow rules from authorities. Still enough density that re was a challenge. Get their bearings before they get land grant. Where the hospitals and the schools are.
