Week 5 (october 11, 2016) lecture overview. Why is it important to understand that language used in reference to disability changes. Person-1 is more of a social model perspective. Person-first = identifying the person before the impairment ex: person with disability seems to present the disability as a negative as detachable= to decrease stigma apa. Identity-1= wheel chair user, deaf, visualy impaired, disabled person etc. Claims the disability as a marker of pride/as fact disability studies. 5 observations regarding language by psychologists (dunn & andrews article) 1- diverse opinions regarding the use person-first or identity-first are likely to persist ex: apa= person-1 vs. researchers in disability studies= indentity-1 . 2- the vernacular disability can serve as a helpful tool for psychologist to navigate among different disability groups allow to respect preferences ex: deaf prefer that term rather than hearing impaired or ppl who are deaf. d/d.
