Document Summary
Immunology --> study of our protection from foreign macromolecules/ invading organisms and out response to them. Parasites: small, 1-2 microns, address them by their proper names. Viruses: nucleic acid, surrounded by protein shell, attach and inject nucleic acid, they highjack synthetic processes inside the cell to make more viruses. Eukaryotes: unicellular and multicellular animals and plants, genetic material is organized into a nucleus. Biotechnology, spoilage of foods, bioremediation, functional foods. Normally found inside the body: gi tract - colon is inhabited by anaerobes and coliforms, skin - mostly coagulase negative, negative staphylococci. What can they do for us: protection from invasive bacteria, metabolism (vitamin k) Immune stimulation: e-coli is the most prominent bacteria in the gut. Can outcompete invasive bacteria and prevent disease: young and old can have underdeveloped normal flora. What protects us from invasive bacteria: mechanical barriers. Skin, saliva, mucous, tears, hair: other helpers. Antibodies, complement, immune cells (t-cells, nk-cells, macrophages), immune system (cell mediated, humoral)
