Document Summary
Basic components: nucleic acid: carries the infectious genetic material, protein coat: protects the core & carries the antigens, surface antigen: protein/carbohydrate & highly variable. #1 - can detect a virus itself in the clinical specimen: hard (cid:271)(cid:272)s (cid:448)ery s(cid:373)all a(cid:374)d does(cid:374)"t grow outside of a living cell, they only infect certain cell types. #2 - indirect detection that detect immune response against the virus look at how the antibodies react against the virus: plaques: zones of clearing made by the virus to living cells. Immunity tests = presence or absence of antibodies (elisa: diagnostic test = rise in antibody titre (concentration) or high antibody titre; evidence that this particular virus has recently caused a viral illness. Respiratory viruses: respiratory diseases, of different families (iprrae) Influenza viruses: parainfluenza viruses, respiratory syncytial viruses, rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, echoviruses, coxsackie viruses, herpes viruses, occasional respiratory tract infection.
