Language: system of arbitrary signs & symbols used to communicate thoughts & feelings. System: every language that is spoken; an interrelated collection of words & rules employed to construct and express messages that generate meaning. Determining meanings of words - all language impose a grammar that arranges words in meaningful way. Verbal communication: ways in which we used the words in language to generate meaning, regardless of whether we communicate face-face, etc. Different people may have different perceptions shaped by their values, experiences & knowledge - no two people share exactly same meaning of the same word. All languages are human inventions composed of signs & symbols - words we speak or write & the system that underlies their use have all made up by people. Sign: stands for or represents something specific & often looks like the thing it represents - thus it has visual relationship to that thing.
