The history and current state of medicare in canada. The first canadian medical system" was composed of the various medical and religious institutions of the many aboriginal peoples. Some of the first public health measures adopted in canada resulted from the cholera epidemic first brought to canada in 1832. At first, variously skilled and trained medical practitioners, from a wide variety of backgrounds, competed for patients. Homeopathy was the first profession to be legalized and to establish its own licensing board. The development of canada"s health-care system, medicare, had both detractors and supporters. Tommy douglas played an important role in the development of medicare. Medicare has had an impact on the class-based utilization rates of medical service. Medicare has had mixed consequences for medical practice and for doctor morale. Medicare is currently, and has been in the past decade or so, experiencing significant threats to public financing as its costs have continued to grow.
