At the beginning of writen history, the medical praciioners in the tigris-euphrates and nile valleys were also priests. Illness was regarded as a spiritual problem, a punishment for sins or for violaions of the norms of society by such acts as stealing, blaspheming, or drinking from an impure vessel. In egypt, under imhotep, medicine began to receive some separate recogniion. Medical praciioners could treat only external maladies. Internal illnesses were irmly believed to result from and to be treatable through supernatural intervenion. Modern western medicine originated in greece in the fourth and ith centuries bc. Hippocrates, one of the most important greek physicians of the ime, proposed the hippocraic oath. This oath is sill relevant to the pracice of physicians today. Hippocrates and the greek physicians of his ime were disinguished by their eforts to secularize the concept of disease. Medicine started to become a pracice based on repeated, systemaic, empirical observaion.
