In 1822 it was thought that lifestyle changes, due to the industrial generation, result in more people getting rickets disease then before: life style changes, x, is the exposure which causes rickets disease, y. We know that the association between lifestyle and the disease are due to (mediated by) sunshine, vitamin d and calcium. Those that have a lifestyle where they are exposed to sunshine are less likely to get the disease because ultraviolet radiation (from the sun) generates vitamin d. There was an idea that the presence of the disease itself makes people change their lifestyle and remain indoors.
