Week 1 Reading: Understanding disability. In World Report on Disability (p.1-17)
- Issues with disability become more acute as more people live to an old age
- People used to focus on separating people with disabilities (putting them into institutions) -> focus now has
shifted to solutions to include them into society
- What is disability?
o Idea has shifted from medical -> social perspective: people are disabled by society, not by their bodies
o Should not be viewed as one or the other, just be look at the different aspects
o Disability is the umbrella term for impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions,
referring to the negative aspects of the interaction between an individual (with a health condition) and
that idiidual’s otetual fatos (environmental and personal factors)
- Aspects:
o Environment
▪ Having wheelchair accessible buildings
▪ Changing the negative stigma against disability
o Diversity
▪ Ou iage of a disaled peso is usuall a
person in a wheelchair or a blind person
▪ Harmful because a disabled person could be any
gender, race, appearance etc.
o Prevention
▪ Primary prevention – actions to prevent cause of health problem
▪ Secondary prevention – actions to detect a health problem at an early stage
▪ Tertiary prevention – reduce impact of an already established disease

o Onset of disability can lead to worsening of social/economic/well-being of an individual
▪ Children with disability are less likely to go to school
▪ People with disabilities likely get paid less and have extra costs associated with medical care
o On the other hand, poverty may lead to onset of disability
▪ Low birth rate
▪ Malnutrition
▪ Lack of drinking water
