HSS 4107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Deontological Ethics, Arson, Consequentialism
Document Summary
These words are neutral until the context is exposed. The following are types of frameworks which establish right and wrong: deontology (principle-based ethics) Deontology is the framework that believes in absolute distinctions between right and wrong actions. Behaviours are either destructive or life af rming with no deviation. Ie. rigid absolute stance that rst degree murder is inherently wrong and evil. Ie. rape/sexual assault, arson, terrorism should be punished, regardless of context or outcomes. This view does not include calculus, thereby they do not weigh pros and cons. It rejects the idea that you can make any kind of calculus depending on self-evident positioning. These individuals are principle-based ethicists (principle is wrong) and are sanctity of life advocates. You have a duty to follow the right, and the difference between right and wrong is prior to any outcome. This means that right and wrong behaviours supersede the outcome, regardless of the outcome (no basis for right or wrong).
