Anorexia: obsessive fear of weight gain, unrealistic perception of weight, can cause bone mass loss, stress on the heart, loss of menstruation. Occurs 10x more in women than men, daily caloric intake 600-800 calories. Bulimia: binge eating followed by purging behavior, excessive exercise, use of laxatives, self- induced vomiting. 9x more likely to occur in women than men, most bulimics are normal weight. Excessive exercise: dsm-5 defines it as exercise that significantly interferes with important life activities, occurs @ inappropriate times/settings, continues despite injury and sickness. Mond et al; measured frequency of exercise and why people do it. Excessive exercise found to be strong predictor of reduced quality of life (guilt when they couldn"t exercise, became obsessive over weight or shape. ) Combo of both behaviors are correlated with eating disorders.
