Document Summary
Began to consider the representation of forms (a word) as. Semiology for saussure is a science of forms; it studies. Ferdinand de saussure: french linguist established theoretical approach to language semiology/semiotics distinct entities with their own intrinsic values significations apart from their contents . A word is merely a form that carries with its own meanings dependent on the system is which is it expressed/revealed. Their significations are not necessarily the same. Saussure does this through 3 terms: signified, signifier, sign, concept wishing to be expressed, the vehicle to express the signified. 1 & 2 are a relationship/correlation between 2 things. What we are doing then is interpreting signs which involves analyzing the relationship between signified and signified. Only when this relationship is discovered is the sign uncovered. Uses saussure"s notion of considering significations beyond their form, he looks at objects, behaviour, photographs, film, etc. , within this same theoretical paradigm.
