DVM 2105 Lecture 12: National Development Agencies and the Myth of Foreign Aid
Document Summary
When we look at foreign aid we have to take into account that they have come to be out of a liberal philosophy. Foreign aid has become a commodity - according to marxists. That"s why politicians, celebrities, etc. all talk about helping the poor. We think that we need to help because the very act of helping enhances the situation. We also enhance our own moral perfection. Having this mutual relationship in helping others, motivates some to say that the foreign aid and assistance have all become a matter of politics: it is given with a calculation of bene ts for the party giving it. We should help others regardless of the good bene ts that may or may not come. We are looking at a utilitarian view: we believe we should help others because we get some bene ts. Part one - introduction: basic notions and de nitions. Part two - donor countries and receiving societies.
