DVM2350 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: A Letter Concerning Toleration, One True Church, Political Liberalism
Document Summary
Based on your own individuality you understand who you are and how you want to live. Each person should have the freedom to decide which model of life to follow. Tolerance has roots in the conception and enjoyment of freedom. The idea of freedom requires tolerating each other. To say that we are di erent means that we enjoy our freedom in di erent ways. Liberal pluralism; people with di erent backgrounds respect and tolerate each other in society. Critics argue that there is a need to go beyond toleration and put an emphasis on the recognition of di erence. Out of the conception of toleration you can discuss secularism: the denial or rejecting of any kind of religious perspective. Locke helps us to think that secularism isn"t against faith but it provides the best atmosphere for people to rely on their own religion.
