DVM 3140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Focus Group, Participatory Video
Document Summary
Overt or covert?: allows for unobtrusive measures and outcroppings. Unobtrusive measures: ie. making comments about hygiene and sanitation in a slum area without asking anyone. Outcroppings: things that are very obvious and require very little intrusiveness: observations should be systematically planned or recorded. Participants may be asked to record whatever they feel relevant or specific activities only: strengths and limitations. Strengths: writer has more control over degree of participation in the research process, participant has time to reflect on what he/she wishes to record, empowering or therapeutic for writer, and may help build relationships of trust. Participants seem to like it, for one, as it can be empowering. They can also help to negate stereotypes, such as participants" ability to provide valuable insight. However, there are ethical issues, especially if you"re dealing with a vulnerable population. Photo essays: used by ngos to record successes in community development.
