(cid:718)real la(cid:296)(cid:258)ua(cid:258)e(cid:719) ca(cid:296) be u(cid:296)derstood as re(cid:257)erri(cid:296)(cid:258) to the (cid:377)a(cid:383) we speak rather than the way parents, teachers, or professors think we should speak they describe what we actually do. Sociolinguists take a descriptive approach, while world outside tends to be prescriptive and we will be studying where those ideas come from (ex. Quebec french is inferior because it has bee(cid:296) de(cid:258)raded b(cid:383) it"s i(cid:296)te(cid:296)se co(cid:296)tact (cid:377)ith french) and whether they have any scientific basis (nope) At the heart of sociolinguistics lies the notion or variability. All languages vary, even within what we consider the same language (french, english, spanish) This variation can be found through all levels of language: the vocabulary(lexis), the sound system(phonology), the grammar(syntax)
