MCG 2101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Rolling-Element Bearing, Thrust Bearing

179 views3 pages

Document Summary

Only designed to handle axial loads in one direction. Has lip on one side of the ring and gives surface to counterbalance the forces. Outer race thicker on one side and inner thicker on opposite. Can have 2 of these bearings facing opposite directions. If have a lot more axial than radial loads, need thrust ball bearing. Designed to give huge advantage for axial loading. If concerned for radial loads, need right bearings. Self aligning can handle radial loads but if shaft off by few degrees can compensate with one of these. Inside of outer race is curved to allow balls to slide. Roller bearing more surface area (line instead of point contact) Negative higher friction so speed not always great. If have high speed, medium speed use ball bearing. Need to know application and choose right bearing. Roller bearings come in all configurations like ball bearings. If need more loads, add more rows of rolling elements.
