Document Summary

Quiet compared to gears, gears have backlash but belts don"t. Rubber gives high friction, fibers give strength. If belt too fast, can fall off pulley or break. Speed ratios from one pulley to next is max of 10, can only bend pulley so much. Can use belt tensioners to make sure belt is as tight as should be. Timing belts have ribs on inside so they don"t slip. Matching pulley machined in such a way that ribs fit perfectly. This is better than flat belt, which can slip more easily. Pulley grooved in such a way that you have more control of speed ratios. V-belt works on different principal than timing belt, works on friction. Ribbed belt unlike timing the ribs are in direction of belt. Unlike v, have all material on top. If want one wheel spinning faster than other, have belts driving each one, use variable speed drives using one belt (don"t have to change gears)
