09/22/16 (4) the control of thought in abrahamic religions (cont. ) In 380ce, christianity was made the official religion of the roman empire with the edict of thessalonica under emperor theodosius i (347-395ce). The christian belief and practices of the church of rome with the pope as its head was the only recognized religion. All other interpretations of christian belief and practice were not to be tolerated. This was called minut the followers of which are called minim and hizonim (outsiders). They were people who separated themselves from the practice and belief of the larger. The destruction of the temple and jerusalem in 70ce scattered the jews around the world. The aftermath led to the emergence of rabbis. Religious life now revolved around writings and books which contain laws that have to be interpreted.
