MUS 1301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Doctor Atomic, Martha Graham, Sonata Form
Document Summary
In art, not a literal portrayal but an imprint of mood or emotion felt from a scene. Impressionism is a sub movement of the more general modernism movement. Late19th century movement that sought to recreate the impressions of a single fleeting movement. Began in france with the visual arts, then moved to music (not about the story, about the emotion) Motives rather than themes, different scales used (pentatonic, whole tone, chromatic) Static harmony instead of strong cadences (don"t go anywhere), 7th and 9th chords (destabilize, can"t find the tonic), parallel motion. Rhythm was free and flexible and had irregular accents. Emphasis on woodwinds and brass, soloistic (highlighting each colour in the orchestra) Thin and airy texture to thick and dense, mostly homophonic. Avoidance of traditional form, every composition had an adapted form. Spend career in paris, studied piano at the paris conservatory. Travelled all over to learn about different types of music from different areas.
