Often used as an umbrella term to refer to rap music and hip hop. When used as an umbrella term alone, it fails to describe the scope of the culture, ideology, etc. of hip hop. Hip hop is more the music incorporates art, dance, language. Rap seems to be the one element that carries forward in a big way commercially; but grew out of a variety of different artistic and cultural forms. Basic definition: competitive cultural expressions of urban youth, consisting of graffiti artists, mobile djs, breakers (b- boys, b-girls, breakdancers), and mcs (later known as rappers) Original four elements: djing music, mcing language, breaking (breakdancing) dance, graffiti/fashion art. A type of street art that is intimately linked with hip hop culture. A type of dance associated with hip-hop culture that became increasingly popular during the early 1980s. A musical practice and product: has become a commercial product.
