Inspection/palpation: joints, size, contour, colour, swelling: signals joint irritation, symmetry, muscles, masses, symmetry: should be equal bilaterally, rom, active, passive: test by anchoring the joint with one hand while the other hand slowly moves it, against resistance: Inspect: alignment of the head and neck, spine should be straight and the head erect. Palpate the spinous processes and the sternomastoid, trapezius and paravertebral muscles, should feel firm with no spasm or tenderness. Inspect: note where spine is straight by noting imaginary vertical line from head through gluteal cleft: palpate: spinous processes.
