Peds lecture 5: care of children with gi disorders. Cystic fibrosis (cf: autosomal recessive trait, mutated gene on chromosome 7: cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator, regulate cl and na channels, 1 in 3600 canadians brown with cf most fatal genetic disease affecting, many effects throughout the body lungs and gi. Meconium ileus: common cause of intestinal obstruction in the newborn, earliest clinical manifestation of cf, occurring in ~20% of patients with cf. Can occur without cf but rare: thick meconium forms in utero - obstructs the mid-ileum, causing proximal dilatation, bowel wall thickening, and congestion. Diagnosis of cf: sweat chloride test, newborn screening, history, antenatal. Iv antibiotics if infected/colonized, also aerosolized abx: very careful use of oxygen during acute episodes, lung transplant becoming more common and has brought hope to patients and their families. Gi system: function: break down/digest food so nutrients absorbed and waste eliminated.
