Document Summary

What is scoliosis? rotation (structural or non- structural). angle < 10 degrees termed spinal asymmetry and have no long-term. Lateral, 3-dimensional curvature of the spine that usually involves spinal. Curves with cobb angle > 10 degrees defines a scoliosis: curves with cobb significance, )ncreased incidence (cid:523)30%(cid:524) of scoliosis if person has an affected family member. Caused by a deformity in the development of the vertebral column in utero: abnormal development occurs by 6 weeks ga, involves either failure of formation, or failure of segmentation. Although skeletal abnormality present at birth, may take time for scoliosis to develop as spine grows. Abnormality may be found on prenatal u/s. Symptoms vary: spasticity, weakness, low muscle tone. Syndromes or neuromuscular condotions can also cause scoliosis. Result of muscle imbalance and lack of trunk control. Early detection is important as early intervention may help improve function and delay progression. Function can include: ambulation, positioning in wheel chairs, prevention of pressure ulcers, and cardio-pulmonary function.
