NSG 4330 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Airway Management, Peripheral Nervous System, Cranial Nerves
Document Summary
Spinal nerves: afferent (sensory fibres, efferent (motor fibres) Spinal cord: transmits messages that coordinate sensation and movement. Pathway for information between the brain and body. Extends from base of skull (foramen magnum) to the end of the vertebrae. 33 vertebrae, 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar and sacral and coccyx fused in adults. Myotome: each muscle in the body is supplied by a particular level or segment of the spinal cord and its corresponding spinal nerve. Dermatome: area of the skin supplied by nerve fibres originating from a single dorsal nerve root. Assess during epidural, sensory issues, measuring level of sensation. Sci: injury disrupts communication between the brain and muscles when neurons lose their connection to axons located below the site of injury. Neurons may still be alive but the path of communication is cut. Causes: car collisions (35%), falls (16. 5%), medical (10. 8%), sports (5. 7%) Risk factors: male, young adult and seniors, sports activities, alcohol and drug use.
