Cared for the sick and establishes hotel-dieu. 1737- sisters of charity of montreal- first visiting nurses of canada. Colonists doubted their intentions- les soeur grises. Pooled their possessions to form a refuge, later were respected- the grey nuns. To finance their missions; made military garments, started brewery & tobacco plant, operated a freight & cartage business. Established multiple hospitals in quebec, manitoba, saskatchewan & alberta.
