Document Summary

Longer lifespan compared to animals (humans- 83yr(female), 78yr(male)) Human development is a result of interacting forces. All of these forces affect life cycle forces. Examines changes in biological and behavioral processes as we age. The four big questions: critical and sensitive periods. Critical period means the age where experiences must occur. Sensitive periods means the optimal age range: nature and nurture. Genetics and environment: ex: lung and skin cancer (environment) vs. brain and bone cancer, continuity verse discontinuity. Gradual or stages: stability verses change. Discontinuous changes continuity: gradual changes, ex: colours fading into eachother. Discontinuity: discrete changes, ex: changing from red to orange to yellow, inverted u- shape, u shape function. Longitudinal: test same cohort at different times. Are changes generalizable to all people or just this group. Cross-sectional: compare different ages at same time. Different cohorts grew up in different time periods (ex: twin towers) Different experiences, cultural changes, environmental changes: ex: wireless technology now prevalent.
