PHI 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Truth Table
Chapter
Truth-Functional Logic
Any given claim, P, is either true or false
Truth Table
Whichever truth value the claim P might have, its negation or contradictory, which
we’ll sbolize ~P, will have the other. This truth table is for negation.
Conjunction - compound claim made from two simpler claims, called conjuncts. A
conjunction is true if and only if both of the simpler claims that make it up are true.
E. parker is at hoe ad Moore is at work
Disjunction – compound claim made up of two simpler claims, called disjuncts. A
disjunction is false if and only if both of its disjuncts are false.
E. either Parker is at hoe, or More is at Work
Conditional Claim - compound claim made up of two simpler claims. The first claim
in a conditional, the P in the symbolization, is the antecedent, the second Q in this
case is the consequent. A conditional claim is false if and only if its antecedent is
true and its consequent is false.
